After the mujahideen’s victory against the roughly 100,000 soviets in Afghanistan in 1409 AH (1989), the country quickly sank into a civil war between the new communist national government and the former warlords.

Not long after, the latter will also tear each other apart, while at the same time thousands of refugees who had been in neighboring Pakistani camps had returned to the territory. Trained in madrasas in the most Puritan Islam, these young people, initially removed from fighting and political games, suddenly took up arms in 1414 AH (1994).
